RH, known for its expansive modern showrooms, has quietly absorbed some of West Coast design’s most revered names – Formations, Dennis & Leen, and Michael Taylor Designs – consolidating them under the banner of RH Estates. And now, for the first time, these collections are accessible to all, unveiled at a striking new gallery in Milan.

A return to timelessness and eclecticism

For decades, Richard Hallberg, Barbara Wiseley, and Dan Cuevas, the creative force behind Formations, cultivated a devoted following among top designers like Holly Hunt and Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Their aesthetic, a masterful layering of periods and styles, offered an “unfussy elegance” that transcended geographical boundaries. The acquisition by RH represents a fascinating pivot for the retail giant, a deliberate move away from purely contemporary lines toward a richer, more historically informed sensibility. Gary Friedman, RH's CEO, sees a clear trend emerging: “We believe the next shift is toward eclecticism and the California look of the 1980s and early ’90s.”

This isn't merely a revival of past styles; it’s a reimagining for the modern era. Think cast stone tables that echo fragments of Greek columns, chairs channeling the sculptural grace of Diego Giacometti, and tables where corrugated iron legs meet cream-colored stone tops – a surprising yet harmonious blend of industrial edge and classical refinement. But what truly sets RH Estates apart, according to Friedman, is its ambition to fill a void in the market. “Most of the architecture in North America is traditional or classic, but there is not really any compelling expression of that aesthetic in the market. We see an opportunity to create something that does not exist today.” The collection isn’t about replicating the past, but about offering a contemporary interpretation of timeless design principles.

The Verano lounge chair, priced at $3,395, and the Capital Leaf side table, at $1,710, are early indicators of the collection’s premium positioning. These aren't mass-produced items; they represent a commitment to craftsmanship and enduring design. With this debut in Milan, RH Estates isn’t just launching a new product line; it’s staking a claim as a curator of design heritage, one that promises to reshape the way we approach interior spaces.
