Paul smith redefines rug design with bauhaus-inspired 'ratio'
Forget the signature stripes and vibrant hues—Sir Paul Smith has taken a surprising turn, collaborating with The Rug Company on a collection that’s both understated and remarkably complex. The “Ratio” collection, a departure from Smith’s typically bold aesthetic, is already generating buzz within the design world, proving that even established icons can reinvent themselves.

A shift towards restraint and texture
Will Cooper, The Rug Company’s creative director, describes the genesis of the collaboration, recalling moments spent simply “sitting on the floor with them,” a testament to the collection’s inherent comfort and practicality. But beyond the tactile appeal, “Ratio” represents a deliberate challenge to expectations. It’s a collection that rewards closer inspection, revealing a depth of craftsmanship that belies its seemingly simple design.
The inspiration? A mood board meticulously curated by Smith, drawing heavily from the principles of the Bauhaus movement. This influence is evident in the collection’s structured lines and restrained palette, a stark contrast to Smith’s usual explosion of color. Instead, the focus is on texture—a complex patchwork achieved through the innovative use of multiple weave structures, a first for The Rug Company.
The showpiece rug, “Takt,” exemplifies this technical breakthrough. The company developed a proprietary knot, a unique blend of Anatolian Tulu and Persian techniques, resulting in a rug with a sumptuous, almost cloud-like fluff. “Part of The Rug Company’s ethos is to innovate and push the boundaries of technique,” Cooper explains. “This is the first time these two knots have been combined, and the result is truly exceptional.”
Smith, who has partnered with The Rug Company for over two decades, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Being able to expand and bring fresh ideas to this collaboration is fantastic.” The partnership, spanning over 20 years, demonstrates a remarkable longevity and a shared commitment to quality and design. Cooper sees the collection as emblematic of his vision for The Rug Company’s future, a balance between honoring its heritage and embracing a “quite young and sexy” aesthetic as the company approaches its 30th anniversary in 2027.
The “Ratio” collection isn’t just a rug series; it’s a statement—a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring appeal of thoughtful design. It proves that sometimes, the most striking statement is made through quiet elegance.
