Designed by Mona Ross Berman, this Hudson Valley home proves that contemporary living and a sense of history can coexist beautifully – especially after a dramatic, flood-induced renovation.
A happy accident leads to transformation
The initial plan was a simple refresh, a cosmetic update to a new acquisition. But as Mona Ross Berman recounts, fate intervened. “Weeks after purchasing the house, in the dead of winter, two water pipes burst and completely flooded the first floor,” she explains. What could have been a homeowner’s nightmare became a remarkable opportunity. This unexpected deluge forced a complete overhaul, allowing Berman to reimagine the home’s layout and functionality.
The result? A seamless flow between spaces, anchored by a new, central kitchen. A long kitchen island, topped with a butcher's block, has become the natural gathering point for family and friends. Bright red bar stools punctuate the otherwise neutral palette, injecting a playful energy into the space. The dining room, now relocated, features a farmhouse-style table, with sea foam green walls harmonizing with the dining chairs, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.
Timeless details and modern comforts
The living room’s heart is a salvaged antique fireplace mantel, sourced all the way from Virginia. “Pieces like this help give it the age and patina that it lacked,” Berman notes, highlighting the careful consideration given to layering textures and patterns throughout the home. It’s a deliberate effort to create a space that feels lived-in and loved, as if it has evolved organically over time.
Beyond the main living areas, thoughtful details reveal the family’s personality. A cleverly concealed wet bar caters to their love of wine, while a library, complete with bespoke cabinetry in a cheerful, Mediterranean-inspired blue, beckons with comfortable seating and ample storage. Even the family room offers a practical touch: a generously scaled daybed that readily transforms into extra sleeping space for overnight guests.
Throughout the house, a vibrant color palette plays a starring role. A vivid red Togo sofa injects energy into the family room, balanced by a navy-and-white chevron rug and glossy blue side tables. In the bedrooms, jaunty patterned headboards add a touch of whimsy, while the master bedroom features a sleek blue four-poster bed.
The ultimate goal, Berman emphasizes, was to create a home that truly works for the family. “They were elated to finally be able to use it and overjoyed with how it all turned out,” she adds. The result is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and a willingness to embrace the unexpected, proving that even a flood can lead to a beautifully realized dream home.
