Key biscayne's ritz-carlton unveils $100 million transformation
For decades, Key Biscayne, a tranquil island just off the coast of Miami Beach, has presented a familiar paradox: could a place so serene also offer a dose of luxury and vibrant energy? The answer, newly redefined, resides within the walls of The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, which has just emerged from a sweeping $100 million renovation, breathing new life into a waterfront icon.
A lobby that commands attention
The most immediate and striking change is the double-height lobby, now dominated by a floor-to-ceiling wall of windows. This dramatic shift, a collaboration between DesignAgency and architecture firm Hart Howerton, isn't merely aesthetic; it's a calculated move to create a “memorable first impression,” as Anwar Mekhayech, a founding partner of DesignAgency, explains. The expansive glass floods the space with natural light, transforming it into a welcoming hub where guests naturally congregate—a far cry from the previous, more enclosed feel.
But the lobby’s brightness is deliberately contrasted by the adjacent Rum Bar. Mekhayech describes its interior as “dramatic and moody,” a deliberate counterpoint achieved through a palette of deep blues, warm woods, and evocative tropical motifs. It’s a space designed for intimate conversation and sophisticated indulgence, a subtle yet powerful statement about the hotel’s ability to cater to diverse moods.

Dining with a view: from italian elegance to aegean breezes
The culinary landscape has also undergone a significant upgrade. Luma, situated within the main building, offers an elevated take on Italian classics, promising a refined dining experience. However, for those seeking a more casual, yet equally captivating, atmosphere, Paralía beckons. This open-air Aegean restaurant, positioned directly on the beach, is a testament to DesignAgency’s ability to conjure atmosphere. A vibrant palm tree mural, warm woods, woven wicker furnishings, and oversized rattan pendants—the latter designed to resemble conch and seashells—create a distinctly Mediterranean and island vibe. The pendants’ undulating forms, Mekhayech notes, “add a touch of whimsy while reinforcing the restaurant’s spirit.”

Rooms and residences reflecting island heritage
Beyond the public spaces, the hotel’s 421 rooms, suites, and 188 branded residences have received a complete overhaul courtesy of CHAPI Design. The design team incorporated bespoke furnishings that pay homage to Key Biscayne’s unique character, utilizing luxe materials like creamy-toned Taj Mahal stone and Butterfly quartzite. Handcrafted glass sconces evoke the surrounding coral reefs, while curved furnishings nod to the island’s agricultural past. Even the decorative stitching on chairs subtly references classic tennis gear, a playful reminder of the island’s history as host to the Miami Open until 2018.
The bathrooms, too, have been reimagined to celebrate the coastal atmosphere. “The washroom, in particular, embraces the simplicity of the shoreline,” says Sheveleva, a lead designer on the project. “Warm, sun-kissed hues, clean lines, and tactile surfaces that recall the smooth sand and gentle surf create an interior that feels like a private beachfront sanctuary.”
The result of this extensive renovation isn't just a refreshed hotel; it's a revitalized destination that successfully balances tranquility and vibrancy, luxury and laid-back island charm. The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne has not only answered the question of whether Key Biscayne could offer a truly exceptional experience, but it has redefined the standard for waterfront hospitality in Miami. The $100 million investment has transformed the property into a destination that truly embodies the essence of Key Biscayne: a place where relaxation and indulgence seamlessly intertwine.
